Congregational System Stress Inventory (CSSI)

The CSSI is a structured, trauma-informed reflection tool that identifies how past disruptions, losses, and conflicts continue to shape a congregation's present life. It measures both exposure (what has happened) and ongoing impact (how it still affects trust, leadership, cohesion, and identity), helping leaders respond with clarity, care, and appropriate pacing.

At the heart of the Pre-Discernment Assessment & Guide is the Congregational Understory & Formation Guide, a structured framework for interpreting your congregation’s data with depth, care, and theological integrity.

Rather than treating inventory results as surface-level metrics, this guide helps leaders understand the deeper dynamics shaping their community, what patterns have formed, what they are protecting, and how they are expressed theologically, relationally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Using a trauma-informed lens, the guide reframes what is often labeled as dysfunction or resistance as adaptive responses, strategies that emerged to preserve safety, belonging, or stability over time. This shift allows leaders to approach their congregation as a system to understand and faithfully engage.
